Today in AvaMods History -> OG AvaMods Server Shutdown
It was 8 years ago on October 27th 2011 that AvaMods officially shutdown their original Day of Defeat gameserver.
It was one of the hardest decisions ever made here at AvaMods. There was a lot of reasons as to why the decision was made as well as a lot of second guessing on whether it was the correct decision. In the end the timing felt right to finally pull the plug and take a step back. The original server had ran from November 27th 2005 until October 27th 2011.
Little did we know that it wouldnt be so easy to just move on after AvaMods. After a couple years of enjoying the freedom that resulted from no longer needing to maintain and administer the gameserver, AvaMods made a few attempts at bringing back its famous Day of Defeat gameserver. Our hearts weren't completely into the first couple of attempts, but we finally got our shit together and made a full fledged comeback with AvaMods 5.o in September 2016.
While its impossible to say what may happen here in the future, the current roadmap has us riding out Day of Defeat till the end....
So the latest hlds update has really screwed the server up. I think I may have got it to sort of still be playable at the moment. I'm slowly working on fixing some of the other issues, but I can't promise anything...
Just wanted to take a minute to point out that dodplugins.net is now back online after having been down for over three months..
I'm going to try and have another chat in the near future with Zor and get some details on the situation. More specifically, whether dodplugins.net will be moving over to the AvaNet to remove any hosting costs for Zor. I also feel that if AvaMods takes over hosting for him that it will help guarantee the longevity of the forums.
We'll have to wait and see what happens though....
5 years ago on July 11 2014 the AvaMods community lost a long time regular, Gen. |SS| The Punisher.
He wanted nothing more than to be a member of AvaMods. In fact I found it quite disturbing how much it seemed to mean to him, so we here at AvaMods decided to have some fun with him in regards to membership. I don't fully recall all the details anymore but I believe we made him and 2 other people trial members (one of the other people also happened to be a real life friend of his). We really had no intention of making him an actual member as we pretty much all agreed that he was too prone to abuse any admin powers that he would have. So we let this trial period go on for a little bit, and I think that might have gone away on vacation for a week or so and when I returned I ended the trial period and told all 3 people that no one was being made a full member. While at the same time I told the other 2 that they really would become members shortly.. So eventually after a slight delay we made the other 2 people full members while making Punisher nothing haha. I remember how pissed off and upset he was about it all...
I wouldn't exactly say that I feel bad about it now... but it really did crush him and he lost all hope for his life... It is probably what drove him to hard drugs and eventually his fatal overdose...
It was 10 years ago today on July 2nd 2009 that AvaMods received the famous 2.ii upgrade.
The bulk of the changes for this upgrade were mostly for the website. The current design of this site owes its heritage to the 2.ii upgrade. I don't recall if there was any significant change made to the game server or not, but it was unlikely as the game server was a constantly evolving organism that was rarely ever directly tied to the various AvaMods upgrades of the old era.

That was a fun, creative, and exciting time for me in regards to AvaMods. At that point I really felt unstoppable when it came to writing plugins and it was a time when I was able to take some pretty wild and unheard of ideas and make them real things. But then on the flip side, the 2.ii upgrade was also the beginning of the end of the AvaMods peak era. My interest and daily involvement in the game server steadily decreased over the next couple of years, until I finally shut the server down. AvaMods 2.ii was the last true version of AvaMods in my opinion, Everything post-hiatus will never be able to compare to the older era of AvaMods.
